April 2021

I had the phrase, ‘What a Wonder’ going through my head so started to put a few thoughts together and this poem is the result. It’s reminiscent of a previous poem of mine, ‘The Search’ (but the theme is much simpler and it’s a lot shorter!)

If you believe there’s a God, it’s well-nigh impossible to understand what he's like using your own thoughts or imaginations.
The images we have are often clouded or distorted by memories of people we’ve known or acquired images, often authoritarian figures.

The good news is that we don’t have to wonder what He’s like because according to the Bible He has shown us exactly who He is, in Jesus.

To me it's an amazing Wonder that anyone can find Him and know Him.

Something to ponder this Easter…

What a Wonder (text below video)

Is it a wonder we can’t comprehend or even pretend

To understand the notion

Of a God Omnipotent, God Divine?

All knowing, all powerful, God of Design.

God of the Universe, God of the Earth

There at it’s birth.

Original Maker, Waker of consciousness,

Sustainer, Container of all…

Small wonder that we, so small,

Cannot fathom a One eternally present.

Pre-existing all the past and all the future to outlast.

Massively, colossally, gigantically vast.

Infinite, Immeasurable, so Immense,

There’s no pretence, that we could make sense, in a human thought,

Of a God like this.

Mortal comprehension falls way short.

No wonder then we can’t conceive, no less perceive

A God like this.

What would we see if God revealed himself to me? To you?

We wonder just how would He be?

Continually disappointed? Consistently demanding? Constantly disapproving?

Requiring permanent placation, perpetual persuasion?

Forgiveless father? High-handed headmaster? Dictating director? Controlling commander?

Is that who we see?

Memories and imaginations, projected expectations,

Distorting and disfiguring our view?

But when we really wonder – seek afresh, search anew.

Him pursue, fixed conceptions undo

And finally see just who He is and what He’s like,

Unconcealed, revealed.

God illuminated, demonstrated.

Jesus’ birth - lived on Earth

Worked miraculously,

Gave extravagantly,

Loved unendingly,

Suffered sacrificially.

Forgave completely,

Rose victoriously,

Lives eternally.

What a wonderful wonder that we can know

The absolute, infinite, eternal truth - that we are

Deeply loved.

Dearly bought.

Consistently cherished.

And everlastingly held by the most powerful arms in the universe.
